Please enjoy some of the photos we’ve taken of Maui’s Humpback Whales!  The normal timeframe for them to be in Maui is December to April.  We’ve found the peak season for viewing these amazing animals is February.  Of course, this is why “high season” is December 15 through April 15 and accommodations book up quickly.


Humpback Whale Fun Facts:

Description
- identified by stocky bodies with obvious humps and black dorsal coloring
- head and lower jaw are covered with knobs called tubercles
- fluked tail has wavy trailing edges
- long black and white tail fin, which can be up to 1/3 of the body length
- pectoral fins have unique patterns, making individual whales identifiable
- 'blows' are 9.8 feet
- adults range in size from 39-52 feet and weigh approximately 79,000 pounds

Migration
- humpback whales typically migrate up to 16,000 miles each year
- feed only in summer in the polar waters of Alaska on small fish and krill
- migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter
- fast and live off their fat reserves while in Maui

Newborn Calves
- roughly the length of the mother's head
- at birth measure 20 feet and just short of 2 tons
- babies nurse for approximately six months

Maturity
- females reach maturity at age of 5, full adult size a little later
- males reach maturity at age of 7
- average lifespan ranges from 45-100 years
- females slightly larger than males

Breeding
- female typically breed every 2 or 3 years
- gestation is 11.5 months
       
Song
- both male and female humpback whales vocalize
- only males produce the long, loud, complex "songs" for which the species is famous
- each song consists of several sounds in low registers and typically lasts from 10 to 20 minutes
- may sing continuously for more than 24 hours
